Movies that Matter: Native America—’The Untold Story’ + ‘Legacy’
February 21, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Many of us are aware of the serious challenges facing Native Americans today. But, do we really understand how critical the situation actually is? This is a part of America’s story that is not often told in its entirety and remains hidden from view.
There’s a cry for social justice stirring in the hearts of a generation, yet it’s a cry that is only just starting to be heard. Join us on February 21 to learn how young Native Americans are embracing change, cultural identity, mentorship, and more. You’ll hear from a number of young Native Americans who are finding their voice and are determined to make a change.
Film presentation of Legacy: MMA fighter Nikki Lowe, Native Hope Fellow, shares her story of perseverance via a ten-minute documentary produced by Native filmmaker Mark Lewis (also in attendance). After the viewing, she will share her mission and, if we’re lucky, her talents on the Native flute. Mark will also be available to discuss the value of telling Native stories via film.
Kansas Middletent discusses the mission “to bring the Untold Story of Native America to light, in order to heal his people and unite us all together in a circle of hope.” Kansas tells his emotional but hopeful story of the disadvantages and hardships of growing up on a reservation in South Dakota, how he was able to overcome them, and how he is working for a future where every Native child grows up filled with hope and possibility.
Trisha Burke and Selim Sandoval, from the Native Hope leadership team, will offer insight into the mission of Native Hope, and its plan to use film/media in conjunction with the work of its ambassadors to dismantle barriers for Native voices unheard.
Pizza and popcorn will be served.
