Negotiation and Behavior Change Training

Every day, both professionally and personally, we engage in a continuous series of negotiations. While it may seem beyond what we formally think of as negotiation (contracts, clients), we are constantly negotiating, with our bosses, subordinates, peers, group members, customers, and clients. In order to succeed in our professional (and personal) lives, we need to be able to communicate and collaborate effectively with the people around us. To do so, we need key negotiation tools and communication skills to apply to the many, varied negotiations we engage in every day.

This two-day workshop focuses on the communication and negotiation challenges we face every day and helps participants gain insight into their own strengths and weaknesses as negotiators. Participants will learn the best ways to get what they want in a negotiation while strengthening (rather than damaging) their relationship with their negotiation counterpart. Using short lectures, role-plays, exercises and simulations, the workshop will provide a number of opportunities for participants to develop and test their skills.

Beyond negotiation and influence theory, this course will teach participants how to incorporate the accompanying communication skills into their lives as new habits in a way that produces lasting changes in their behavior. We all learn to negotiate (advocate for our interests) at a very young age, leading each of us to have developed a set of negotiation skills and habits that we employ, often without giving it much thought. Without conscious attention to our negotiation style, we are limited to this narrow repertoire of familiar responses. And while these default responses may work well in some situations, they limit and handicap us in others. This course provides a model for shifting out of these default behaviors and offers tools for creating lasting behavior change.

All are welcome to attend the training and we are hoping to attract individuals and organizations pursuing missions of Sustainability, Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Entrepreneurship.

Those interested in learning more prior to registering can attend the free pre-training event on Tuesday April 5th (12:30PM – 1:30PM) at Impact Hub. The pre-training event will provide a sample of both the content and the method of the training at no charge. The lead trainer Justin Wright will be available to answer any questions you may have.
