We open our space the first Tuesday night of each month for you to join forces with other social impact movers and shakers to make Boston better!

You can come jump in on a project, or bring a social impact project of your own.Come host small events, co-work, network, trade skills and get involved! At Open Project Night you can:

  • Network with local people who share an interest in a better Boston, Cambridge, and beyond.
  • Imagine together, share opportunities to get involved, and trade skills.
  • Work on existing local project ideas or come to work on your own (white boards provided, laptops are not).
  • Host your event or meeting in one of our meeting spaces (fit 4-6 comfortably), as long as you’re open to others joining you!

What kind of projects are we talking about? We’ll update you on this month’s projects soon. Apply to bring your project here! Previously at Open Project Night, we’ve had these groups and events:

  • Offer feedback with Leonard Tshitenge after learning about A Voice For Dads, a passion of Leonard’s in empowering Boston low income neighborhood dads by providing resources, a safe space and an outreach van.
  • Join the Incluvie for their workshop, Diveristy in Movies. Explore and discuss racial diversity in Hollywood movies and TV as a step toward encouraging racial harmony through film.
  • Interested in the intersection of behavioral economics, design, and psychology for advocacy and positive change? Recent attendees joined Nick Di Stefano with Action Design Boston to learn more about the field, and discuss current projects and ideas.
  • Racism and White Supremacy did not begin with Trump, nor will it end with Trump. Attendees joined Boston Knapsack Anti-Racism Group for a group discussion on Racism Beyond Trump and about the four types of racism: Individual, Interpersonal, Institutional and Structural.
  • The DIY Data Art project uses technology, innovation, and art to address racial injustices, economic equality, and the ‘value gap’ in local Boston communities in a personalized way. The project aims to equip youth of color with the data literacy skills to navigate the world around them and better understand data and the technologies that they use in their everyday lives.
  • Teams learned to use and edit the largest collaborative mapping project in the world with Open Street Map Boston, and make Boston better by providing access to local spatial location data. (BYOLaptop!)
  • Buzzing Barriers invited attendees to “share your story” by creating mixed media art, and learn about using visual storytelling to help cultivate compassion and support local social justice nonprofits.
  • A Boston OpenIDEO chapter meetup about Circular Design showed us how to apply principles of Circular Design to design products that don’t generate waste.
  • A Know Your Rights learning community segment focused on immigration, with Impact Hub Boston members working in immigration law and community organizing.
  • A rapid prototyping design session for a digital tool that will promote a community of young women interested in running for political office, with the IGNITE nonprofit and Jessica Weaver.
  • Talking local refugee support actions with the Cambridge Support for Syrian Refugees group

FAQ’s:

DO I NEED TO HAVE A PROJECT OF MY OWN TO COME ALONG?

No, not at all! Just come along if you:

  • Are keen to meet different people in your area who care about making Boston a better place.
  • Want to brainstorm how your local street, library, or housing system might be different
  • Want to work together with others to make changes happen in your area
  • Want to find out about volunteering and work opportunities
  • Want to find volunteers or recruits for your project
  • Are running something like a neighborhood garden, a friends of library group or an early-stage business and want a space to host events and meetings

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

  • Materials you need to workshop / present your project
  • Your ideas & inspirations
  • A collaborative spirit to work with new + old friends
  • A snack to share, if you can! We’re believers of food as love, and sharing as caring.

WHEN IS IT?

Open Project Night is held one Tuesday night per month (typically the first Tuesday) at Impact Hub Boston, from 6.00pm to 8.30pm.

HOW DO I BOOK A MEETING SPACE?

There is a selection process for groups wanting to book one of our free conference room meeting spaces this evening. To apply, submit this form online to our team with information about your group’s goals and how you’d benefit from being part of the evening here.

We assess applications according to these 5 criteria:

  1. Events and meetings that benefit Boston
  2. Events and meetings that benefit the public / community
  3. Events and meetings that might not otherwise be able to afford or access the Impact Hub spaces
  4. Events and meetings that have a high impact on their attendees
  5. Events and meetings by groups who haven’t used Open Project Night spaces before (ie. if you’ve made use of the spaces frequently, others may be considered first) (We are unlikely to give preference to paid events, unless there’s a good case for them).
